Pumpkin Seedling, 6 pcs
Spacing Requirement
Plant pumpkin seedlings at least 90cm (3 feet) apart in rows that are spaced about 180cm (6 feet) apart. Pumpkin plants have sprawling vines, and they need ample space to spread and grow properly.
Harvest Period
The time to harvest pumpkins from seedlings typically ranges from 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the pumpkin variety and growing conditions.
Light Requirement
Pumpkin seedlings require full sunlight for healthy growth. They need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. If you're growing them indoors, make sure to place them in a sunny spot or provide 12 hours of light under a growth light.
Soil Specifications
Choose well-draining and fertile soil for your pumpkin seedlings. The soil should be rich in organic matter and have a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0. Amending the soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting can provide essential nutrients for the growing plants.
Water Requirement
Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the early stages of growth. Once the plants are established, they become more drought-tolerant, but regular watering is still important. Water at the base of the plants to avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to fungal issues.
Fertiliser Application
Pumpkins are heavy feeders and benefit from nutrient-rich soil. Before planting, incorporate a balanced fertilizer into the soil following the recommended application rates. As the pumpkin seedlings grow, you can side-dress them with compost or apply a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer every 3-4 weeks.
EC and pH Monitoring (Hydroponics)
Regularly monitor the Electrical Conductivity (EC) and pH levels of the nutrient solution. Pumpkin seedlings prefer an EC range between 1.5 to 2.5 mS/cm and a pH range of 6.0 to 7.0. Adjust the nutrient solution as needed to maintain these levels throughout the growth cycle.
Support Requirement
As pumpkin vines grow, they can become quite large and heavy. Providing support for the fruit is essential to prevent them from sitting on damp ground and rotting. You can use straw, wood boards, or slabs to elevate the pumpkins off the ground.
Pruning Care
While pumpkin plants don't require extensive pruning, you can remove any damaged or diseased leaves to improve air circulation around the plant. This can help prevent diseases and improve overall plant health.
Pests and Diseases Control
Keep an eye out for common pumpkin pests like squash bugs, cucumber beetles, and powdery mildew. Monitor your pumpkin seedlings regularly to detect any issues early and take appropriate measures to protect the plants.
